Chapter 29: The End of it All

By: Rosy

“Teachers and Students,” the principal said, “an anonymous source has just donated FOUR-THOUSAND DOLLARS for us to totally re-do our run down science lab, and build TWO huge student lounges loaded with furniture, computers, snacks, and more! Our whole junior and senior-high school will be doing a couple fund raisers to raise $1,500 more, and then we’ll have enough to TOTALLY complete this project…within A YEAR!!!”

The auditorium erupted with cheers and applause.

“WHAT A WASTE of money!” Mrs. Deany shrieked, “School is for strict WORK! Not for sitting around having fun in lounges all day!”

Suddenly the room fell dead-silent.

“Mrs. Deany,” The principal said sternly, “I suggest you shut your mouth immediately. And you better believe I will see you in my office the minute this gets out!” then he plastered on a smile, “The first fund raiser will be announced towards the end of next week. Ummm, there’s only 20 minutes of school left, so I guess you guys can use that as a break.”

Everyone emptied out of the auditorium, and many of them rushed over to the prinicpal’s office to listen in on what was happening.

By the time Erin, Sophie, and Jenny got there, there was already a large and growing crowd noisily chattering.

“What’s happened so far?” Sophie asked Rose Clark.

“Principal Lockette has just been yelling at Mrs. Deany. He said, ‘I gave you another chance, and you already threw it away! First you were mean to the students, and now you were very disrespectful to me!’”

“Whoa!” Jenny said, “but…he hasn’t fired her yet?”

“Not yet, but I think he’s going to. Oh! They’re sending another message back.

Danny Brion, who was standing next to the office door, turned to face the crowd, and he yelled, “THE PRINCIPAL JUST FIRED MRS. DEANY!!”

Students began jumping up and down and cheering.

“Quiet down!” Danny said, “He’s saying something else!”

The students hushed as Danny listened in and then passed the message back.

It reminded Erin of when she played the telephone game when she was a little kid. She just hoped the message would stay more accurate than it had back then.

Jorjia Sumpters who was standing in front of the four girls turned around and said, “Principal Lockette just said that he’s gonna hire a 19 year old Harvard grad to replace Deany! He said she’ll be able to ‘relate to the students better’ and that’s she’s really nice and fun! She’s probably gonna start next week!”

“Sweet!” Jenny exclaimed.

Then someone by the door yelled, “THEY’RE COMING OUT! EVERYBODY, GET OUT OF HERE!”

Students immediately started pushing and shoving as they scrambled to their lockers so they wouldn’t look suspicious.

The bell rang just as Principal Lockette and Mrs. Deany walked out, and Mrs. Deany sped off to her classroom.

Jenny, Sophie, and Erin packed up their backpacks and got ready to go home.

“I’m so glad the weekend is almost here! Tomorrow’s finally Friday!” Jenny said.

“Yeah!” Erin agreed, “It seems like forever ago that we were fighting about you going to Jenny’s party, Soph! It was only Friday last week!

“The weekend is gonna be so nice,” Sophie said, “I can’t wait till we get our new teacher! I think she’s gonna be so cool! I’m glad Megan gets to start school again on Monday! That’ll make it even more fun! Tomorrow we’ll have to tell her about everything that has happened and help her name her new baby sister!”

The girls put on their jackets, and Sophie ran out to the bus, Jenny went out to her family’s limo, and Erin went to get her younger siblings: Alex, Joanne, and John, so they could all walk home together on that beautiful September day.

When they got home, Erin set her backpack and saxophone in her bedroom, and then she went to the kitchen where her mom was making snacks for everyone.

Erin dramatically collapsed into a chair, and Mrs. Rogers asked, “How was your day, honey?”

Very eventful!” Erin replied.

“Fill me in quick,” Mrs. Rogers said as she handed Erin a summer sausage sandwich.
