Chapter 25
Chapter 25: Obstacles
By: Rosy
Jenny slowly walked inside and grabbed her books from her locker. She felt so disappointed. She walked to Mrs. Deany’s English class to find all the other students in their desks, and Mrs. Deany reading Across Five Aprils to the rest of the class.
When Mrs. Deany saw Jenny standing in the doorway, she pulled off her reading glasses and strictly said, “Andrews, you’re 15 minutes late! That calls for a triple-detention in my class! One for every five minutes!”
Jenny’s shoulders sagged and she looked at her watch, “But…it’s not even 8 o’clock yet! There’s still 5 more minutes.”
“Well then your watch is obviously WRONG!” Mrs. Deany said, now yelling, “BUT IF YOU CHOOSE TO STAND HERE AND ARGUE WIH ME, I CAN MAKE THAT DETENTION LONGER! Now SIT DOWN!!”
“Yes, ma’am,” Jenny said, and rushed to her seat.
While Mrs. Deany was monotonously reading, Jenny passed a note to Sophie that said:
Hey! I can’t believe my watch was off! I thought you guys ditched me!
Sophie read it, and then wrote back:
Yah, I know. It stinks that you got that triple-detention! Mrs. Deany is always so mean and strict. We’d never ditch you like that though.
Sophie slipped the note to Jenny, the whole time looking down at her desk.
“Jenny’s hands feel kind of wrinkly today,” Sophie thought. Then the horror struck her. She quickly looked up, and to her dismay, Mrs. Deany was holding the note!
“Passing notes in class? I don’t think so…” she said with an evil chuckle. Then she read the entire note aloud in front of the class-her, Sophie, and Jenny’s faces growing even redder when she came to the part about how “strict and mean” she was. “Girls,” she managed to get out-she could barely contain her anger,”You each get 2 detentions. That means you have 5, Miss Andrews.”
Then the principal walked in, smiled, and said, “I’m here to take Erin, Jenny and Sophie to see Megan Davis.”
“I suppose you can take Sophie and Erin, but Jenny needs to stay here. She already has 5 detention slips this morning.”
“Oh, that’s okay,” the principal replied, “she can come with anyway.”
Mrs. Deany stomped her foot, clenched her teeth, and said, “She will stay here.”
“Excuse me, Mrs. Deany, but I am the principal here! I’m in charge.”
“Principal Lockette! She has 5 detentions! She must stay here! Who cares if…Mahogany is dying! Jenny needs to stay here until she completes all 5 detentions!
The principal’s face began to grow redder and redder, and he looked like he was going to explode with anger, “Mrs. Deany! How could you be so insesnitive?! That is the last straw! I’ve had many complaints from students and parents, but I just shook them off. But this…this…I need to get going, but I will see you in my office right away at lunch.”
Mrs. Deany looked astonished, “But…Principal Locke-”
“In my office. At noon-sharp. Jenny, your detentions are canceled; girls let’s go-NOW!”
The girls grabbed their stuff and went with the principal. When they got in his car, they began whispering to each other in the back seat.
“Do you think the principal is gonna fire Mrs. Deany?” Erin asked.
“I’m not sure,” Sophie said.
“As mean as it sounds,” Jenny said, “I hope he does! I’m tired of her being so mean to us!”
Before they knew it, the principal announced that they were at the hospital.
Erin grabbed her notebook and gel pens and then they all rushed inside. They were a half-hour late.
“FINALLY you guys are here!” Megan exclaimed.
